چکیده

The accident rate for UAVs is higher than for conventional aircraft. A significant proportion of these accidents are associated with human error. If UAVs are to be permitted to operate in the National Airspace System, it will be necessary to understand the human factors associated with these vehicles. Unlike conventional aircraft maintenance, UAV operators must ensure the reliability of an entire system that comprises the vehicle, the ground station, and communication equipment. At present, there have been no published studies of the human factor issues relevant to UAV maintenance. Twenty-two structured interviews were conducted with personnel experienced in the operation of smallto medium-sized UAVs. Information was gathered on critical UAV maintenance tasks including tasks unique to UAV operations, and the facilities and personnel involved in maintenance. The issues identified were grouped into three categories: hardware; software/documentation; and personnel issues. Hardware issues included the frequent assembly and disassembly of systems, and a lack of information on component failure patterns that would enable maintenance personnel to plan maintenance effectively. Software/documentation issues included the need to maintain computer systems, and difficulties associated with absent or poor maintenance documentation. Personnel issues included the influence of the remote controlled aircraft culture and the skill requirements for maintenance personnel.

In-Trim Flight Investigations of a Conceptual Fluidic Thrust-Vectored Unmanned Tail-Sitter Aircraft

The feasibility of using a stand alone Fluidic Thrust-Vectoring (FTV) system for the purpose of longitudinal trim of an unmanned aerial vehicle is the focus of the research presented in this paper. Since the fluidic thrust vectoring requires high pressure secondary air to deflect the engine exhaust gases, this research also provides an analytical toolset for preliminary sizing of a suitable sec...

Designing and Modeling a Control System for Aircraft in the Presence of Wind Disturbance (TECHNICAL NOTE)

This paper proposes a switching adaptive control for trajectory tracking of unmanned aircraft systems. The switching adaptive control method is designed to overcome the wind disturbance and achieve a proper tracking performance for control systems. In the suggested system, the wind disturbance is regarded as a finite set of uncertainties; a controller is designed for each uncertainty, and a per...

A Summary of Unmanned Aircraft Accident/Incident Data: Human Factors Implications

A review and analysis of unmanned aircraft (UA) accident data was conducted to identify important human factors issues related to their use. UA accident data were collected from the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. Classification of the accident data was a two-step process. In the first step, accidents were classified into the categories of human factors, maintenance, aircraft, and unknown. Acci...

Implementation of "MSG-3" for Crack Growth Analysis of Aircraft SSI Components

The main goal of this article is to implement the MSG-3 process in structure field for an SSI component of b747 aircraft. This process is expected toincrease the ease of aircraft maintenance and its safety level. MSG-3 logic took a top-down or consequence of failure approachmeaning that MSG-3 reduces the maintenance cost and upgrades safety. Moreover, it cansignificantly help saving thetime and...

Human Challenges in the Maintenance of Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Executive Summary Human error will pose a threat to the operation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), just as it does in other fields of aviation. If UAVs are to be permitted to operate in the National Airspace System (NAS), it will be necessary to understand the human factors associated with these vehicles. Rather than eliminating the potential for human error, the removal of the on-board pilo...
